Many volunteer opportunities available this summer

Congratulations to all Allentown Central Catholic High School students on another successful school year! The Viking Nation wishes luck to all our seniors, who will graduate June 2.

Underclassmen will take their Semester 2 exams June 2, 5, 6 and 7. All exam days will be A-days and the exam period will last 75 minutes. June 2 will be Period 1 and 2 exams, June 5 will be Period 7 and 8 exams, June 6 will be Period 3 and 4 exams and June 7 will be Period 5 and 6 exams. Each exam day will have an 11:30 a.m. dismissal.

Students are only required to report to school if they have an exam. If students must ride the bus to school and do not have an exam during a given period, then they must report to the cafeteria. Bus riders waiting for their transportation after the first exam are prohibited from leaving the building.

June 8 will be the last day of school for all underclassmen, with a special schedule and 11:30 a.m. dismissal. Please remember to bring in your textbooks during your exam periods or on the last day of school. The exam schedule is posted within the semester exams option under the academics tab on the school website, acchs.info.

This is the last call to purchase Allentown Central Catholic spirit wear through the online store. All Viking spirit wear products will be sold, including the vintage ACCHS shirt featured on “Ted Lasso.” All orders are due May 31 and will be delivered to school or your home around June 21. Although most spring sports have ended, Viking athletes are still going strong. The boys lacrosse team defeated Moravian Academy May 23 at Emmaus High School in the district 2A semifinal game. They advanced to face Northwestern Lehigh in the boys lacrosse 2A championship May 25.

The boys baseball team fought to reach the District XI 3A semifinals and played Panther Valley at Tamaqua High School May 27.

All athletes are reminded to return all uniforms and equipment to the athletic office as soon as your season ends. If these items are not returned, you will not be eligible to collect your cap and gown.

The upcoming summer will feature many valuable opportunities for future Vikings to develop their athletic skills.

The Rahkman at Rockne Basketball Clinic will be 6:30-8:30 p.m. June 9 at Rockne Hall, 301 N. Fourth St., Allentown. The clinic will be run by Muhammad-Ali Abdur-Rahkman, a professional player for Victoria Libertas Pesaro, a University of Michigan alumnus and Central’s all-time leading scorer.

The clinic is for boys entering grades 6-9 and is free for up to 60 participants. All participants will receive a Gatorade, clinic T-shirt and Rahkman custom designed basketball shorts. To register, use the QR code in the online weekly newsletter.

The ACCHS boys basketball team is hosting skill development clinics this summer June 19-22. The clinics will run 8:45-11:45 a.m. at the Walson Center at St. John Viennese Regional School, Allentown.

In order to attend the clinic, players must be entering third to ninth grade. There is a cost per player and registration may be done through the link in the online weekly newsletter. The Vikette basketball team will hold open gyms and workouts for seventh to ninth grade girls 3:15 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays until June 8. The Vikettes will also run basketball youth clinics and camps this summer. The first through fourth grade camp will be 8:30 a.m. until noon June 27-29 and the fifth through eighth grade camp will be July 10-14.

The Vikette volleyball team is also hosting clinics. The first and second grade clinic will be 8-10 a.m. June 24, the third through fifth grade clinic will be June 16-17 and the sixth through eighth grade clinic will be June 9-10. There are many summer volunteer opportunities open to ACCHS students. Students will receive service hours for the upcoming 2023-2024 school year.

Queenship of Mary Parish, Northampton, is holding their Parish Festival 11:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. June 11. If interested in volunteering, call the church rectory at 610-262-2227 and ask to speak with Pete.

Students are encouraged to volunteer at the upcoming summer enrichment camps at ACCHS. The camps are open to all rising fifth through ninth graders. The camps will occur 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Mondays through Fridays, The “Around the World” camp will be July 10-14, the “All About Sports” camp will be July 17-21, the “Animal Kingdom” camp will be July 24-28 and the “Super Sleuths” camp will be July 31 to Aug. 4. The Volunteer Center of the Lehigh Valley will have its YLEAD Summer Youth Leadership Camp for high schoolers 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. July 10-14 and also July 24-28.

Participants will improve leadership skills while helping nonprofit organizations through service projects. The camps will be held two different weeks at the Volunteer Center’s office, 25 W. Third St., Bethlehem (Banana Factory, second floor). There is a registration fee and you may apply by scanning the QR code in the flyer located in the online weekly newsletter. St. Joseph the Worker Church, Orefield, will have its International Food Festival June 23-25. The festival will offer food, drinks, bingo, games and live music. The Brian Dean Moore Band will perform 7-9 p.m. Friday, The Aardvarks will take the stage 7-9 p.m. Saturday and the Lucky 7 Band will entertain 6-9 p.m. Sunday. The event will have activities and fun for the whole family, so stop by and support St. Joseph the Worker Parish.
