PHS softball tops ESN, falls to Nazareth, Emmaus

It was two complete, opposite ends of the spectrum for the Parkland High School softball team in their three Eastern Pennsylvania Conference games last week.

Last Monday, April 10, the Trojans were shutout in dropping an 8-0 game at Nazareth. The very next day, however, they were on the right side of a shutout victory, beating East Stroudsburg North 15-0 in four innings at home. But, unfortunately for Parkland, it was right back to where it started the week, and fell to Emmaus 15-0 in five innings last Thursday on the road.

Against the Blue Eagles, Nazareth held Parkland to just two hits, while Nazareth had 11. The Blue Eagles opened the game with a three-run, bottom of the first inning and then tacked on a run in the third and four in the fourth.

Cecelia Quiroz and Addison Fritzinger had the two hits for the Trojans.

Against East Stroudsburg North, Parkland scored multiple runs in every inning, which turned out to be four at-bats. The Trojans recorded two runs in the bottom of the first, five in the second, three in the third and five in the fourth and outhit the Timberwolves 15-1.

Fritzinger led the lineup with four hits and six RBIs. Brenna Zavecz, Maria Moore and Quiroz all finished with two hits, with the latter adding two RBIs. Allison Hunsberger, Zavecz, Taylor Benckini, Chelsea Dietrick, Isabella Witt, Nevaeh Young and Hana Damra all had an RBI each. Fritzinger earned the win inside the circle and allowed just the one hit and struck out six batters.

Not much went right for Parkland in the game against the Green Hornets as they were held hitless and committed seven errors in the field.

The Trojans are currently 4-7 overall and 4-6 in the EPC.

They lost a one-run game at Stroudsburg this past Monday and host Bethlehem Catholic Wednesday before going to Whitehall on Friday. They round out the week with a home, nonconference game with Tunkhannock on Saturday afternoon.
