Baseball getting busy

With the thought of facing the fact of playing four games over five days, Northampton head baseball coach Mick Sugra knew his pitching staff would be stretched to the maximum.

His solution was a simple one.

“We’re going to pitch Johnny Whole Staff,” mused Sugra. “It will be a challenge for us, but we have done it so many times in the past. We also believe we have the arms to get it done, but they have to be out in full force this week.”

After Monday’s rainout against Allentown Central Catholic, the Konkrete Kids (1-0) were dealt the hand of playing Central Tuesday, East Stroudsburg North Wednesday, Liberty Friday, and Allen Saturday.

Sugra stated that he likely will plan to throw seniors Evan Hughes, Owen Laury, Matt Merced, Ian Onuschak, and juniors Sam Erschen, Mason Haupt, Brody Graff and Logan Higgins, along with sophomore Erik Castro.

“We like our pitching,” added Sugra. “We know we have the depth, and we will need it down the stretch.”

The Kids opened the season with a 10-8 victory over perennial East Penn Conference (EPC) power Parkland.

In that game, Higgins went 4-for-5 with four RBIs, and Merced had two hits with four RBIs.

Senior Dylan Fopsko had two hits and two RBIs, and Erschen and senior Nate Wolfe each had two hits.

Hughes threw the first two innings for the Kids, and Castro, Merced, and Higgins followed.

Last season the Kids got off to an 0-3 start with losses to Parkland, North Pocono, and Liberty. They were outscored in the span, 37-10. From there, they won 13 of their next 17.

“That win was huge for us,” boasted Sugra. “Parkland still has a lot of talent and we wanted to get out on a good note. Our kids did a nice job.”

Sugra is confident his team can keep their winning ways going this week. They have Bethlehem Catholic looming Monday.

“We would love to win all four, but I do think we have a good shot to win three,” he said. “It is going to be a tough week. Liberty is a very good team.

“We’ll have a good idea of where this team is at the end of the week.”
