EHS volleyball looks to build on 2022 season

The Emmaus High School boys volleyball team will have more familiarity as a program entering the 2023 season under the direction of second-year head coach Jeff Elsea.

The Hornets fell short of Eastern Pennsylvania Conference and District 11 championships last season for a team that finished 14-5 overall, but Elsea believes in year two that his program will build upon that.

“We have a great foundation that has carried over from last year,” said Elsea. “That, coupled with the new additions to our roster will allow us to be extremely competitive this season. Our roster allows for a great deal of versatility due to multiple individuals who are able to play various positions. This will allow us to make changes on the fly to help improve our success.”

Emmaus brings back setter Cooper Henseler, middle hitter Jametric Harris, outside hitter Logan Dougherty, outside hitter Johnny Cannone, opposite hitter Lord Henry, libero Zachary Baus and defensive specialist Brian Cobb. Some newcomers include opposite hitter Cael Kratzer, middle hitter Colin Holden and outside hitter Braden Dang.

It is a deep group that has experience playing different positions on the court.

“Since we have so many players that can play multiple roles, this can also work against you,” Elsea said. “They will need to fully understand each position’s roles, so we are able to make split second changes and be successful. The new additions will need to step up and take the reins due to losing seven seniors this coming year to allow us to continue to be successful for years to come.”

Emmaus begins its season on Monday at home against Whitehall in EPC play. The Green Hornets then host Governor Mifflin in nonconference action on Thursday before rounding out the week at Easton on Saturday.

“I’m extremely excited for this season,” said Elsea. “Last year was my first year as head coach at Emmaus and that had its challenges. This year we are in a better position to stay competitive. The players know what I expect and have taken well to the new style of coaching so far.”
