Parkland beats Emmaus in regular season finale

Parkland wrestling’s foray into the District 11 3A Duals resulted in defeat last Saturday, Feb. 4 at Freedom High School.

The Trojans fell in a quarterfinal matchup against Northampton, 40-26. Emanuel Montalvo, Adrian Gacek and Michael Gavrilesku each managed pins in securing their wins at 189, 215 and 285, respectively.

Blake Dergham won an 18-6 major decision in is 114-pound match over the Konkrete Kids’ Zayne Dayoub. Teammate Juan Moya took care of business in securing a 15-6 major decision over Mason Basara at 145.

“After losing the coin flip to Northampton, we lost the ability to manipulate the lineup to avoid (Northampton’s Dagen) Condomitti with (Victor) Carrasquilla at 160,” Parkland coach Jon Trenge said. “That set the match in a direction that would ultimately be about two wins short of competitive. Most of the kids on the team really battled hard to do their jobs.”

Three nights later Parkland earned a better result when it defeated rival Emmaus, 39-22. With his team trailing 0-6 early, Carrasquilla got things rolling for Trenge’s troops when he pinned the Green Hornets’ Sam Rainford at 1:13. Then Montalvo displayed gritty and smart wrestling in securing a 15-5 major decision win over Lord Henry at 172.

Gacek made it look relatively easy in pinning Jake Gross in 1:20 for the 215-pound triumph. Eli Russ won a 15-11 decision over Jackson Max in an entertaining 107-pound tilt. There was no suspense in Dergham’s 18-1 technical fall win over Aiden Bayard at 114. After a forfeit win Parkland won their final match of the night when Phoenix DelVecchio pinned Chancellor Henry in 5:31 for the 133-pound win.

The victory raised Parkland’s record to 12-4. The District 11 3A Championships are scheduled for Feb. 24 and 25 at Liberty High School.
