Thoughts on the big game: Eagles-Chiefs

Eaglesmania has engulfed the Lehigh Valley like a five-alarm blaze, and there is much anticipation about a presumed classic showdown with the Chiefs in Super Bowl LVII in Arizona early Sunday evening.

We all have had our own as well as our share of prognostications about the big game. How do some of the coaches and athletes from Catasauqua, Northampton, and Whitehall see the showdown? Here are some of their predictions and thoughts:

Catasauqua athletic director Tom Moll: “Chiefs, 28-24. I’m not a football fan, and didn’t watch either of the championship games. I’m getting ready for March Madness.”

Catasauqua head boys’ basketball coach Eric Snyder: “Eagles, 31-21. They have been an extremely dominant team all year when Jalen Hurts played. I personally have never seen a quarterback improve and carry his team so much from one year to another. I never thought Hurts would be this good in the NFL, and I thought he was nothing but a backup. But he proves how much hard work, dedication, and commitment, and coaching can make a change in a player. I believe Nick Sirianni has done a masterful job with game planning as well as his offensive and defensive coordinators. They have put Hurts in the perfect position to make plays and they know their talent and use it accordingly.”

Catasauqua head baseball coach Steve Bradley: “Eagles, 34-31. There won’t be a lot of scoring in the first half, and both offenses will loosen up in the second half. The Eagles have a more complete team. They have a better offensive line, defensive line, better receivers, and better defensive backs. It should be a great game.”

Catasauqua head wrestling coach Joe Russo: “Chiefs, 24-21. Andy Reid vs. the Eagles is a great story.”

Catasauqua boys’ soccer head coach John Inman: “Eagles, 37-34. Based on injuries and current momentum, I believe the Eagles will win. Their pass rush will get to an unhealthy Mahomes, and he will struggle to find his banged-up receiving corps.”

Catasauqua football coach Travis Brett: “Eagles, 35-28. Decision on fourth downs could be the key to this one.”

Former Catasauqua wrestler and baseball player Austin Brett, who now wrestles at Fairmont State: “Eagles, 38-21. The Eagles have a solid team at every position, so they should be able to win.”

Former Catasauqua quarterback, wrestler, and baseball player Zack Bradley: “Eagles, 35-24. I think the Chiefs are suspect up front compared to the Eagles, who will change the game for Mahomes, who struggled throwing the ball when he was forced to his left last week.

“I would say player-for-player the Eagles have the advantage, but I would never count out a team led by Mahomes. I think there will be two keys to the game – the Eagles being physical with (tight end Jason) Kelce at the line of scrimmage and having help over the top, and bringing pressure to Mahomes’ right side.”

Former Northampton head boys’ basketball coach Coy Stampone: “Eagles, 31-24. This is basically the team with the best roster (Eagles) vs. the second best team (Chiefs) in the NFL, however, with the best player in the NFL. Hoping for a great game.”

Current Northampton head boys’ basketball coach Matt Scholl: “Eagles, 31-20. The Eagles’ defensive line will pressure Mahomes and slow the high-powered Chiefs’ offense. (Eagles’ wide receiver) A.J. Brown will break out for 100 yards and a touchdown.”

Northampton head boys’ baseball coach Mick Sugra: “Eagles, 34-17. I’m a Giants fan, so it pains me to say that. But I think the Eagles are too good, and the Chiefs still won’t be 100 percent.”

Northampton head hockey coach Brian Ruff: “Chiefs, 28-26. It’s just a guess. I’m not a huge football fan anymore. It’s a Sunday distraction during hockey season.”

Whitehall head boys’ basketball coach Jeff Jones: “Eagles, 27-21. First, I am not a Eagles fan; I am a Rams fan, so I enjoyed last season much more. From start to finish, the Eagles have been the best team.”

Sports editor Scott Pagel: “Eagles 34-31. Preparing myself for a stressful, back-and-forth game, much like 2018. I plan to eat the same pregame meal, and wear the same shirt I did five years ago. Mix in a few beverages to get me through, and hope it will be a fun day.”

As for me - “Eagles, 24-13. The Eagles have had that mojo as being “the team” all season long. They have the huge advantage on the defensive line, and that will be the difference.”
