Hanover Township Council sets rain date for trick or treat

During the Oct. 5 Hanover Township, Lehigh County, Council meeting, council decided to add a rain date for the upcoming trick or treat.

Councilman Robert Heimbecker was absent, but the meeting still moved forward with Chairman Bruce Paulus, Vice Chairman Michael Woolley and Councilmen Anthony Rossi and Robert Lawlor.

During her monthly report, township Manager Melissa Wehr mentioned a resident reached out to her requesting the idea of a rain date. A resident also approached the council during courtesy of the floor to discuss the possibility of the backup date.

Currently, the township schedules the event for the last Friday of the month and has not offered a rain date in the past.

Lawlor explained that, in his experience as a former New Jersey resident, trick or treat was always scheduled Oct. 31 with no rain date. He explained Pennsylvania is unique for often scheduling the Friday before Halloween and holding trick or treat Nov. 1 if there is inclement weather.

The resident pleaded with council members and reminded them there was significant rain last year, which deterred many from going out.

Council agreed to schedule a rain date, holding treat or treat Oct. 28, with a rain date of Oct. 29. There will be a formal vote on the next meeting’s agenda.

Moving forward with business, Lawlor requested township Engineer Al Kortze inquire about stoplight timing at the intersection of Schoenersville Road and Ray Street, stating traffic has been extremely congested in that area.

Kortze explained power outages can impact the lights’ sensors, which control the cycles. He said he will look into the matter and return with a response.

The township building, 2202 Grove Road, will be utilized as a collection site for winter clothes to benefit the students of the Catasauqua Area School District. Items for donation include new and gently used winter items for all ages and sizes. Donations will be accepted all winter.

For more information on donating, contact the township office at 610-264-1069.

Council will next meet 7:30 p.m. Oct. 19. To view the agenda ahead of time, visit hanleco.org.
