Larry L. Mengel helped develop Army’s M1 tank

Larry L. Mengel, 81, of Wake Forest, North Carolina, died April 24, 2022, in Raleigh, North Carolina. He was born in Stockertown. He was the husband of the late Martha Mengel and is survived by his second wife, Adrienne Mengel.

He was a 1962 United States Military Academy graduate.

He earned a master’s degree in Industrial Engineering from Lehigh University.

He was in the U.S. Army for 30 years. He was an L-Troop Commander, 11th ACR (66/67). He developed and ran simulations for the M1 Main Battle Tank and the AH-64 Apache attack helicopter. He was in 1978 at Detroit Diesel Alison. He was the TRADOC System Manager for the Simulator Networking Program until he retired.

He was then a contractor liaison between industry and the military. He worked in Taiwan and was a program manager for Alion Science and Technology.

He was a church council president of Memorial United Methodist Church, Elizabethtown, Kentucky. He was chairman of the church’s building committee.

He was a volunteer and a past president of the Hardin County Habitat for Humanity, where he began the Habitat Restore and a home repair program.

He was a president of Feeding America Kentucky Harvest. He volunteered at the Wake Forest Restore. He was in Dell Webb community volunteer organizations.

He is survived by a daughter, Stephanie Knudsen; a son-in-law, Ken; and a granddaughter, Camille Merchant-Knudsen and her spouse Travis Merchant-Knudsen, his stepson Stephen Rigo and family; a stepdaughter, Adrienne Melick and family; and three brothers, Morris, Robert and Darrell and their families.
