National Guard’s Anthony Ray promoted

Major General Ray Shields, the Adjutant General for the State of New York, announces the recent promotion of members of the New York Army National Guard in recognition of their capability for additional responsibility and leadership.

Anthony Ray, of Bethlehem, assigned to the Battery A, 1st Battalion, 258th Field Artillery, received a promotion to the rank of 1st lieutenant Oct. 22..

Army National Guard promotions are based on overall performance, attitude, leadership ability, and development potential.

These promotions additionally recognize the best qualified Soldiers and attract and retain the highest caliber Citizen Soldiers for a career in the New York Army National Guard.

The New York National Guard (New York State Division of Military and Naval Affairs) is the state’s executive agency responsible to the Governor for managing New York’s Military Forces, which consists of nearly 20,000 members of the New York Army National Guard, the New York Air National Guard, the New York Naval Militia and the New York Guard.

Four locals inducted in Tri-Alpha

Demetrius Mullen and Yamilet Ferrufino, of Bethlehem, were inducted into Alpha Alpha Alpha (Tri-Alpha) Honor Society of Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania. Jessica Fiore and Kelly McGuire of Bethlehem, were inducted into Alpha Alpha Alpha (Tri-Alpha) Honor Society of Cedar Crest College.

The honor society promotes academic excellence, leadership development, and campus and community service for first-generation college students.

Tri-Alpha membership is by chapter invitation for eligible students who must be a current full-time degree candidate in an associate’s degree or baccalaureate program, have completed at least three full-time semesters of study (minimum 36 credits), at least one of which must have been at the institution where they are being inducted (for transfer students), who have an overall GPA of at least 3.2 in all coursework, and who come from a family where neither parent nor any legal guardians earned a bachelor’s degree.

Elias SBDC summer intern

Keenaan Elias of Bethlehem, a student at The University of Scranton, completed a summer 2021 CARES student internship with The University of Scranton Small Business Development Center. Funded by the CARES Act through the Small Business Administration, the student interns worked with the University’s SBDC and completed consulting work with some of the Center’s existing clients. These students helped small businesses develop marketing plans and conducted research to help them pivot their businesses during the pandemic. The business analytics major will graduate in 2023.
