CHS wins, Tigers are up next

Takin’ care of business.

It’s an old, familiar song from the 1970s, but the Catasauqua Rough Riders did just that in a timely fashion in the recent 35-16 victory over Schuylkill Haven that wasn’t as close as the 19-point differential.

Coupled with a 31-14 win over Pine Grove the previous week, the Roughies solidly have bounced back from an unexpected loss to Minersville.

“I thought we controlled things from the start,” said Catty head coach Travis Brett. “We had a 21-0 lead at the half. We got the ball at the start of the third quarter, and then we reached 35 to get the Mercy Rule.”

Brett was impressed with quarterback Christian Fye, who was 4 of 5 overall for 106 yards and a pair of touchdown passes.

Running back Jacob Scheirer pushed Catty into the next gear when he took a handoff and found Wyatt Younes downfield for a 74-yard scoring play in the second quarter for a 14-0 advantage.

“That really sparked the kids,” noted Brett. “We had scored earlier, but it jumped started them further, and we took over.”

Elijah Soler had another big game on the ground for the Roughs, as he ran for 105 yards on 13 carries with a touchdown.

If there was a drawback, Schuylkill Haven running back Connor Goehring ran for 206 yards on 27 carries and scored both of the Hurricanes’ touchdowns. Catty has allowed an average of 109.4 yards per game, while 143.3 via the air.

“He’s a helluva athlete,” said Brett about Goehring. “He was a stud, and it seemed like he was running all night.”

Brett credited the play of Alex Oakley and Matt Fotta, who have played in the absence of Anthony Hunsicker, who could return form a knee injury on Thanksgiving Day.

“They have filled in for us,” said Brett. “But we miss the presence and the pass rush that Hunsicker gives us.”

The Roughies (7-2) will end their regular season with a trip to undefeated Northwestern (9-0) Friday night.

“They have some pretty good athletes, and they are usually all over the field,” said Brett about his opponent. “Their quarterback can throw, and he reads the defense really well, and they have two good tailbacks. On defense, they will run a 4-4 and will send people.

“We want to slow the game down and run some clock. We’ll need to be able to run the ball.”

PREDICTION: The Tigers are coming off a 42-14 win over Saucon Valley in which they sat their starters for the second half. Northwestern quarterback Justin Holmes -- a Kent State recruit -- and running backs Cade Christopher and Dalton Clymer have been an effective trifecta ... Catty has clinched a district berth and sat at No. 3 to begin the week. They will stay there with a win, but could drop to fourth with a loss and a Minersville win over Nativity ... Catty’s last win over the Tigers was at Northwestern, 21-18, in 2017, the last year of Phil Dorn’s reign ... Northwestern has outscored their opponents, 340-130 ... On paper, it looks like a mismatch, and Brett knows his team has to be hitting on all cylinders ... He also believes Northern Lehigh will beat Palmerton and grab the top spot in the Class 2A region. If they do, Roughies will go there if they fall to the fourth seed ... Roughies have looked good the last two weeks, but coach Snyder will owe me a cheesesteak from Doughboys on 512 ... NORTHWESTERN, 34-21.
