Four Trojans compete at district golf tournament

The District 11 golf championships were held Tuesday at the Steel Club in Hellertown.

Four Parkland golfers competed in the event.

Jimmy Kelly was the only Trojan boys player to make the field. He shot 7-over par 79 for 11th place.

After a hot start that saw Kelly take an early lead in the tournament, he made back to back double bogeys late in the front nine and was unable to climb back up the leaderboard.

Kelly made birdies on holes 2 and 6, sandwiched around a bogey on the fifth. He was still 1-under par before he made double bogeys on the seventh and eighth holes and bogey on the ninth. He settled down a bit after making the turn. On his second nine Kelly made three bogeys and six pars, but it wasn’t enough to get into the top six places and advance to states.

Three Trojans girls players also competed in districts.

Sydni Sundstrom finished tied for eighth with a 99, while Trojan teammates Chloe Chase and Danielle Crenshaw finished tied for 11th place at 101.

Liberty’s Matthew Vital won this year’s District 11 Class 3A boys title with a 2-under par 70, one shot better than Matt Zerfass (Emmaus). Liberty also won the boys team title as four Hurricane players finished in the top eight places.

Other players finishing in the top six and advancing to states individually include Michael Vital (Liberty), Hunter Probst (Stroudsburg), Aiden LeBlanc (Emmaus) and Trent Moyer (Northampton).

East Penn Conference girls champ Evelyn Wong (Emmaus) won the girls Class 3A district title with a 3-over par 75, beating Saucon Valley’s Emma Shelby by three strokes. Shelby and Natalie White (Bangor) also advance to states.

In Class 2A, Palmerton’s Josh Suto took first place at 1-under par 71 and led the Blue Bombers to the team title. He beat Moravian Academy’s Evan Eichenlaub by one stroke. Eichenlaub, who shot 5-under par 32 on the front nine, had a four-shot lead before Suto made eagle on the 15th hole and Eichenlaub made a bogey on the 16th and a double-bogey on the 17th.

In Class 2A girls, which had a field of just two players, Brooke Powis (North Schuylkill) shot 104 to cruise to first place over runner up Katie Miller (Tamaqua) by 21 strokes.
