Coplay public works pauses grass collection

At the Oct. 5 Coplay Borough Council workshop meeting, Paul Boyle, public works director, reported there will be no grass collection in the borough until further notice.

Currently, the facility the borough uses to process the grass clippings is no longer accepting grass. At this time, residents are being asked to mulch their grass whenever possible since it is better for the environment. If mulching is not a feasible option, residents can include their grass clippings with their trash pickup.

In other business, Councilman Rick Kern explained the new playground equipment purchased for the Saylor Park playground will not be installed until the spring of 2022. This equipment was purchased with funds received from a Local Share Account grant.

Kern also noted that if the borough is the recipient of the Greenways Trails Grant, those funds would be used to update the equipment in the tot lot playground.

The Coplay library is now equipped to accept credit cards for any fees owed or purchases made. Councilwoman Janet Eisenhauer explained this is a convenience for patrons and did not require any special equipment. Also, Eisenhauer reported the summer reading program was a big success, with 221 children participating.

Those involved with the aerobics classes at the borough hall gym before the COVID-19 pandemic hit are looking to resume these activities again soon. Also, Coplay Sports is asking to use the gym at borough hall several times a week for a youth basketball program.

Council members discussed granting permission to the various groups and will vote on the subject at the Oct. 12 meeting.

Council President Louis Bodisch gave an update regarding the new public works building construction project. He mentioned the garage floors will be poured this week, and the garage doors will arrive at the end of the month.

Bodisch said the move-in date could occur in November 2021.
