Library hosts Community Heroes Day Oct. 7

Come out to honor our local superheroes Oct. 7 at the Emmaus Public Library, 11 E. Main St. The library will hold its annual Community Heroes Day 6-8 p.m. This is the opportunity to meet our awesome first-responders, firefighters, EMTs and police officers and thank them for the service they provide for our community. The event allows time to check out their equipment and tools used to save lives. The library’s parking lot will be blocked off 5 p.m. to prepare for the event. The rain date is Oct. 21. Be sure to save your space along the Emmaus Halloween parade route Oct. 16. According to borough records, this will be the 100th anniversary of the Emmaus Halloween parade. The first mention of an official Halloween Parade Committee was Oct. 20, 1919. On Oct. 3, 1921 a committee informed council as to the holding of a Halloween parade. So this year’s parade is sure to reflect the 100-year anniversary. This year’s parade steps off 7:30 p.m. The deadline for parade registration is Oct. 8.

If you are interested in volunteering to help with the parade, join the volunteers who have been meeting 7 p.m. every Wednesday in the community room on the second floor of borough hall. Come a little early for the parade and view the runners 7 p.m. in the Halloween in Emmaus 5K. Many of the runners will be in costume. For information, visit http://emmaus5k.com. Proceeds from the race benefit the borough’s park system and the Halloween parade.

The Emmaus Garden Club will meet noon Oct. 5 at Faith Presbyterian Church, 3002 N. Second St., Emmaus. The program will be “Succulents.” Susan Wilson, a teacher and PSU master gardener, will discuss succulent characteristics, varieties, light, water and humidity needs, basic growing tips, pots and soil. She will talk about common problems, propagation and arrangement of containers displays. Wilson will bring examples of succulents for some lucky winners. Guests are always welcome. There is a lot of new news from the Emmaus Public Library. Stop in and see the new carpeting. Also, the library is now open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Fridays. The library has gone fine free. Some program highlights offered in October are a chance to meet the author Dan Yaccarino 5 to 6 p.m. Oct. 14. Yaccarino will talk about how to draw and talk about emotions. His latest book “The Longest Storm,” will resonate for children who’ve experienced the COVID-19 quarantine or other kinds of loss.

For the adults there is a meeting of the Alzheimer’s caregivers support group 10:30 a.m. Oct. 12, a creative writing group 1 p.m. Oct. 21, a coloring club meeting 6:30 p.m. Oct. 25 and a memoir writing group meeting 1 p.m. Oct. 26. Be sure to come out 2 p.m. Oct. 30 to hear the Halloween tales with the Lehigh Valley Storytelling Guild. Registration is required but this event is free. Register at eplkids@cliu.org.

The Emmaus Farmers Market is held 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. every Sunday, rain or shine at Triangle Park, Main Street in Emmaus. Be sure to come to the market in costume on Halloween. For information, visit info@emmausmarket.com.

The kickoff party for the popular Emmaus Arts Commission’s Student Film Festival will be held 6 p.m. Oct. 15 at Emmaus Community Park. The competition is open to any school in the Lehigh Valley and beyond. There is an entrance fee.

The nominees for winning films will be announced Oct. 29 and the premiere screening of submitted films will be shown at the Emmaus Theater Nov. 1. The Emmaus Historical Society’s museum, 218 Main St., Emmaus, is open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays. The museum is featuring the 100th anniversary of the Emmaus Halloween Parade with a great display. Let’s all celebrate this iconic event.

The society’s member meetings and programs are still on hold until further notice.

The Emmaus Historical Society is accepting donations for next year’s community yard sale. Call to schedule a time to drop off items. Clothing or upholstered furniture are not accepted.

Emmaus Borough Council meets 7 p.m. Oct. 4 and 18 in borough hall, 28 S. Fourth St. The borough will hold Household Hazardous Waste Day 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oct. 30 at Emmaus Community Park. This is the event where you will be able to get rid of some of your household chemicals, oil and paint. The event is for borough residents only. Proof of borough of Emmaus residency is required. Trick or Treat Night for Emmaus is 6 to 8 p.m. Oct. 29. Be sure to turn on your porch light if you are welcoming some little ghosts or goblins. Car drivers – please be on the lookout for the trick or treaters walking the streets.

The Emmaus Police Department, 400 Jubilee St., will host the National Drug Take Back Day, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 23. On other days there is a box in which to dispose drugs in the police department lobby. For information, visit borough.emmaus.pa.us.

Come out Oct. 16 to see the Hogwarts Express Magic Art Car which will be featured at the Juxtahub ArtCar Hootenanny. The new event which takes place at 375 S. Tenth St., 2 to 7 p.m. will also feature a food truck, live music, kid’s activities and art demonstrations.

Fire Prevention Week is Oct. 3 -9. The theme is “Learn the Sounds of Fire Safety.” Fire can happen anywhere. This year’s theme pays particular attention to smoke and carbon monoxide alarms and alert devices that meet the needs of people who are deaf or hearing-impaired. These include strobe lights, low frequency alarms and bed/pillow shakers which activate at the sound of the alarm. Please take time to thank our dedicated fire personnel.
