Boys top Mounties 2-1

Whitehall’s boys soccer team regrouped from its 2-0 loss to Allentown Central Catholic last Wednesday and defeated Stroudsburg, 2-1, on Friday.

In Whitehall’s match against Stroudsburg, Gio Mazzola and Miguel Roa scored for the Zephyrs on assists by Elie Khalil and Charles Yacoub. Cole Guerney made two saves.

Nick Milonas scored for the Mountaineers on an assist by Logan Weitzman. Paul Alejandro made 12 saves.

In Whitehall’s match against Central, the Zephs held the Vikings scoreless until the 46th minute when Brandon Quinn’s shot went to the top right corner.

“Chuck [Kuczynski] crossed it in. It deflected off a Whitehall player, came to me, and I tapped it in. Right place at the right time. It felt awesome; second goal of the season for me,” said Quinn. “We thought we played well (in the first half). We just had to finish our chances.”

Owen Wandalowski scored the Vikings’ second goal on an assist by Ben Scandone.

“After Brandon’s goal, we were feeling the heat from them, and they were ramping up the pressure, so it was pretty important we got that second goal,” said Wandalowski. “Ben had the ball just outside the 18, a defender came on him, and he tapped it to me. I took a touch, inside of the foot, into the top right corner.”

Central head coach Taylor Holko knew the goals would eventually come for the Vikings.

“Whitehall was doing a good job defensively, and we were having trouble finding that final pass, and we had a couple shots, not quite on target, and I think for us, that was the biggest difference, getting better looks [in the second half],” Holko said. “I told the guys at halftime, it’s just a matter of time, so keep shooting. I’m just really proud of them.”

Guerney made eight saves for Whitehall, and Ryan Yen made six saves for Central.

“They came out attacking us immediately, and we didn’t attack them,” said Whitehall coach Chris Bastidas. “But I thought in the second half, we did really well, had the ball a lot and a ton of advances.”

Lightning stopped the match with 7:41 remaining and both coaches agreed they would not resume or continue at a later date.
