WHS girls well-represented among EPC softball all-star selections

This season produced a lot of highlights for the Whitehall softball team, and that success on the field translated to getting nine players selected to this year’s all-star teams.

The Zephyrs placed seven players on the Eastern Pennsylvania’s Conference first team, and two on its second team.

Getting the nod at first base was Lindsey Gawrys. Gawrys was a second team selection in 2019.

Meghan Hutter made her second appearance on the first team, this time at second base. She made the first team as an outfielder in 2019.

Abbey Reese is the first team shortstop, while Jess Spanitz represents the Zephs at the hot corner on this year’s first team EPC squad.

Outfielder Emma Bonshak is also a first team selection, joining teammate Mackenzie Laub who also is a first team representative for the Zephs in the outfield.

Kate Yadush was selected as the Designated Hitter on the EPC first team.

The second team included outfielder Abby Vivian and pitcher Madison Cunningham.

Head coach Blake Morgan said that having nine players appear on the league’s all-star teams is a reflection of how well they played all season.

“It says a lot about the girls and how hard they worked,” he said.

He said that team success breeds individual success, and that’s what produced their huge representation among the member schools in the Lehigh County Division.

He said that his coaching staff also helps prepare the players to succeed. That group includes Kyle Stinner, Ed Stinner, Jeff Vivian and Mike Deutsch.

“They gave the girls so much good work,” said Morgan.

Morgan was also appreciative of all the support from the Whitehall community. He said that having them come out and get behind the team has been a big factor in their success. That vibe was readily felt at the EPC semifinals at Pates Park, where fans filled the bleachers and gathered along the outfield fence to root for them in their bid for a title. He said the atmosphere was electric.

The same could be said in the District 11 playoffs as Whitehall’s run ended in the finals against Northampton before dropping their state playoff game.

“They’ve been great through the whole season,” said Morgan of the fans and their support.
