Township, fire company partner on new pumper/tanker purchase
The Upper Milford Township board of supervisors took a major step toward funding a new pumper/tanker for Western Fire Company on July 2, approving a draft resolution that would establish a township-managed reimbursement plan for the vehicle while allowing the funds set aside for the purchase to earn interest over the life of the loan.
Solicitor Marc Fisher explained that the pumper/tanker will be funded through a combination of state funding and township support. Under the proposed arrangement, the township would make a lump-sum commitment and reimburse the fire company for its loan payments.
The township would create a restricted account dedicated to the project and reimburse the fire company as payments are made. The fire company would be required to provide written proof that loan payments are current, and the township would retain the right to audit the account. The fire company also would be prohibited from disposing of the vehicle without township approval.
Township Manager Bud Carter said the money would be placed in a separate account used only for loan payments, allowing the funds to earn interest over the next 20 years.
Supervisor John Zgura said he would prefer paying for the truck up front and voiced concerns that future boards could choose to use the reserved money for purposes other than paying off the truck. Carter agreed, stating it would be “extremely irresponsible” for a future board to divert funds designated for the pumper/tanker.
Zgura said his primary concern was ensuring the fire company remains protected. Carter noted that if the fire company’s loan application is denied, the township would purchase the pumper/tanker directly, eliminating the opportunity to earn interest on the money. Fisher said the resolution will return to the board for approval at its July 16 meeting.
The board also approved Resolution 2026-030, establishing a Volunteer Fire Company Gift Card Program.
In supervisor reports, Zgura said the township’s 250th anniversary parade and celebration will be held Sept. 5. Organizers are seeking volunteers and owners of convertibles willing to transport veterans from the township building to Lenape Park. Information is available on the township website, Facebook pages and digital sign.
The Vera Cruz Homecoming will be held Aug. 16. Organizers are still seeking advertisements for the event program. The Italian Guys of Kunkletown food truck will provide food, and the committee is seeking an inverter generator.
The next planning meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. July 9 at the Vera Cruz Fire Company. Additional information is available on the event’s Facebook page.
