Mary Popowycz honored as 2021 Unsung Hero

Mary Popowycz, of South Whitehall Township, was one of 22 Lehigh County residents and a group of about 70 people honored as part of the Lehigh County Aging and Adult Service’s 21st annual tribute to Unsung Heroes.

This tribute, in honor of Older Americans Month, celebrates older adults in the Lehigh Valley who have displayed exceptional generosity with their time and talents to enrich the lives of others in the community.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, instead of the annual recognition ceremony, honorees received certificates of recognition, flowers, a pin and yard sign delivered to their homes.

According to her tribute:

“I met Maria Popowycz my first day at Cedar View Senior Center and was immediately struck by her outgoing personality and her willingness to help out in any capacity.

“Maria is a very crafty person, who likes to share her talents with others, whether it’s teaching a craft or sharing something she created.

“It has proved to be a very valuable skill during this pandemic.

“When the building first closed down in-person activities and events, it was devastating for everyone who enjoyed the socialization these things offered.

“Residents were fearful and not really sure how to fully protect themselves from this awful virus.

“Maria and another resident started an initiative to help residents of the building stay safe - they sewed.

“Masks were made - one for everyone in the building if they wanted one, free of charge.

“And after that, Maria continued to sew masks - beautiful floral ones, whimsical kids’ masks, even some with Gritty on them.

“These masks went to day cares and individuals; people who appreciate the work she put into each mask.

“When the center is operational, Maria is the craft lady.

“We supply the materials; she teaches the craft.

“She preps the craft, finds the best way to do it, and shows everyone else how.

“Evidence of her love of sharing and helping others can be found hanging on the apartment doors here at Cedar View.

“In addition to the crafting, Maria is always ready with a ride, or willing to run to the store for someone.

“Her kind and generous nature shines through in this time of uncertainty.

“She also volunteers in the center when it is open by helping to serve lunch for the nutrition program.

“She is a wonderful addition to our center and to the community here at Cedar View.

“Her selflessness and willingness to share and teach make her a true Unsung Hero.”
