High School Musicals: Freedom: ‘Pippin’

Freedom High School Theatre Company brings back the Middle Ages with live performances of “Pippin,” 8:30 p.m. June 5, 6 and 7, Bethlehem Area School District Stadium, 1115 Linden St., Bethlehem.

In the tale told by the Leading Player, head of a mysterious performance troupe, Pippin is a prince searching for meaning and significance. The young prince and his father Charlemagne are loosely based on real-life characters from Medieval history.

Freedom production director Justin Amann is aided by assistant director Natalie Parker, music director Denise Parker, choreographer Joey Schubert, assistant choreographer Vanessa Ruggiero, creative lead Priscilla Salazar and set designer Yoshi Tanokura.

With music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz, the libretto was written by Roger O. Hirson.

The 1972 Broadway premier was directed by Bob Fosse, with the musical nominated for 11 Tony Awards, receiving five Tonys. The 2013 Broadway revival was nominated for 10 Tony Awards, receiving four Tonys.

Signature songs include “Magic to Do,” “Corner of the Sky,” “Glory,” “Simple Joys” and “Morning Glow.”
