Becahi crowns five champs

Bethlehem Catholic used the sting of losing the team title to Nazareth at the District 11 3A tournament as fuel toward a dominating performance at last weekend’s Northeast Regional 3A tournament.

The Golden Hawks crowned five champions and advanced nine wrestlers to this week’s 3A East Super Regional at Quakertown, taking home the regional team title by a decisive 187 to 163.5 margin over Nazareth.

Dante Frinzi was one of the Hawks definitive stars on the day, as he worked through the 120-pound bracket meticulously without giving up a point in three victories.

He punctuated the day with an 8-0, major decision over Austin Fashouer of West Scranton to bring home his first regional gold medal.

“I don’t really think about not giving up points,” Frinzi said. “I just try and go out there and make a name for myself. My practice partner is Tyler [Kasak] and we just keep working together with our main goal of becoming state champs, but we look to get better everyday in the room.”

Tyler Kasak (126) followed Frinzi’s footsteps with the gold medal theme, pinning Parrish McFarland of Pottsville in 44 seconds. It was Kasak’s third pin of the day in a total of 5:15 to cap off a dominating performance.

Matt Mayer (132) continued the winning ways with a 6-5 win over Nazareth’s Dominic Wheatley in the finals, using two first period takedowns to catapult himself to victory.

“Having a great scrap is awesome because it shows you what you need to improve on and get better at,” said Mayer. “Dominic is a great wrestler and you can’t underestimate anybody and it was good to have another battle with him.”

Andrew Harmon made it four-straight gold medals for the Hawks with an 8-2 decision over Northampton’s Christian Fritz at 138-pounds. After Fritz scored the opening takedown of the bout, Harmon put Fritz on his back for two nearfall points to take a 5-2 lead into the second period and maintain control over the final four minutes.

Evan Gleason rounded out the Becahi champions with a dominating 12-0 major decision over Nazareth’s Noah Okamoto, as he built an 8-0 lead in the first period after tilting Okamoto twice.

Landon Muth (160) made another run to the tournament finals in consecutive weeks, but ran into the buzzsaw of Northampton’s Jagger Condomitti in a 20-3 technical fall defeat to take second.

Cael McIntyre (113, third), Trey Miletics (145, third) and Anthony DeRosa (189, fourth) also advanced to Super Regionals.

With the tournament mimicking the typical early rounds of Hershey, the Becahi wrestlers know they’ll be in store for some early battles.

“It’s going to be uncharted territory going into Super Regionals, but we’re going to approach it just like any other tournament,” Mayer said. “You train all year for moments like these and you just go out and wrestle the guy in front of you.”

Frinzi echoed similar sentiments in regards to the final tuneup this weekend before a hopeful trip to Hershey.

“We’re taking it the same as any other tournament,” he said. “Just go out there and wrestle and give it our all.”
