PHS girls remain undefeated

The Parkland girls swimming team defeated rival Emmaus for the second and final time during the regular season last Wednesday 106-80. The win improved the Trojans’ regular season record to 8-0.

“I think the kids did well,” said Parkland coach Robert Robitaille. “We posted a lot of lifetime bests in primary events, so there’s not much to complain about there.”

No complaints could be filed for the Trojan foursome of Devon Corvaia, Madison Tewksbury, Sophia Cerimele and Kayla Johnson. All season they’ve produced and this battle against the Hornets was no exception. The ladies won the 200-yard medley relay with a 1:50.81 time, just a whisker ahead of the Emmaus foursome of Bella Buchman, Lauren Sharp, Kera Reinhard and Georgia Magditch at 1:51.34.

Tewksbury had a fine day. The sophomore won the 100-yard breaststroke in a photo-finish by .21 of one second over Emmaus’ Lauren Sharp at 1:07.37. She finished second in the 200-yard individual medley, barely missing out on first by .80 of one second. Tewksbury also was a member of the foursome - along with Olivia Stevenson, Corvaia and Johnson - who finished second in the 200-yard freestyle relay. This second-place finish was even closer than Tewksbury’s near victory in the 200-yard IM - .06 of one second.

“Madison is a great kid,” the coach said. “Very dedicated worker. She’s not afraid to get after a set, and she’s not afraid to train hard everyday.”

Claire Weaver is another up-and-coming Trojan swimmer. The junior has already established herself as one of the program’s valuable members. Against Emmaus, she finished second in the 200-yard freestyle at 1:59.23, fourth in the 500-yard freestyle, second as a member of the 400-yard freestyle team with Simone Lin, Stevenson and Cerimele, and third in the 200-yard freestyle relay with Madison Roseman, Janiyiah Colangelo and Sydney Platt, just over three seconds off the winning time.

“Claire is a great teammate,” Robitaille said. “What I think is best about her is that there’s a lot of untapped potential. I think that she’s right on the cusp of really getting to that next level.”

Other notable Parkland performances included senior Gwendolyn Houser who won the 200-yard IM, Johnson claiming a top finish in the 50-yard and 100-yard freestyle, Corvaia winning the 100-yard butterfly, Stevenson finishing first in the 500-yard freestyle and Allison Roth winning the diving competition.

Parkland ends the regular season with a Feb. 23 battle with Nazareth, Easton and Allen. The District 11 Diving Championships are scheduled for Feb. 27 at Emmaus, with the District 11 Swimming Championships set for March 6 at Parkland. PIAA Diving and Swimming Championships are scheduled for March 13 and 20 respectively at Cumberland Valley High School.
