LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Girls had up and down year

The Northampton girls soccer team endured a tumultuous 2020 campaign.

They dealt firsthand with a case of COVID-19 that delayed the start of their season beyond the September 25 date when other teams began competition.

They went 2-4 over their first six games and looked to be in danger of missing out on a district playoff berth before running the table in their last four games to finish 6-4.

The girls gained a measure of revenge by ending the season of defending district champion Freedom, only to have their two leading scorers suffer injuries.

The team beat Cement Belt rival Whitehall in a suspenseful, opening-round district playoff game that went to penalty kicks. But, their season finally came to an end in the district quarterfinals in a loss to eventual district champion Parkland.

The players’ statistics for the abbreviated season were as follows:

Raine Korpics (8 Goals, 5 Assists), Isabella Nota (8 G, 1 A), Alex Benedict (6 G, 2 A), Lauren Straub (5 G, 3 A), Korinne Andersch (2 G, 1 A), Kyleigh Straub (1 G, 4 A), Kylie Gilliard (1 G), Ali Gallo (1 G), Jordyn Smolenak (1 A), Julia Minnich (1 A). Goalkeeper Olivia Vajda had 120 saves.

While the team’s eight seniors have played their last games for the Konkrete Kids, five of them will continue their soccer careers in college.

Korinne Andersch will attend Shippensburg University. Alex Benedict is going to Mansfield University. Kyleigh Straub will matriculate at Millersville University. Becky Galicki will continue her education at Kutztown University. Isabella Nota will get her postsecondary education at the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown.

Led by Korpics, the team will return a solid foundation upon which to build next year. The team’s injury woes did allow head coach Michael Missmer the opportunity to evaluate many of his younger players under the crucible of the district playoffs. Missmer credited his seniors with helping to develop the team’s future.

“Next year we’re coming for a district championship again. What I came here to do was to build a program where you lost seniors that it looked like you couldn’t replace, and you replace them because of the gifts those seniors gave.”

Becky Galicki will head to Kutztown.
Kyleigh Straub had a goal and four assists this season.
