Whitehall football gets a win over Canaries

Whitehall quarterback Quinn Wentling might have been on his way to a long night with a pair of interceptions against Allen last week.

Instead, he made it an uneventful one for the Canaries.

Wentling rebounded for an eventual evening as he scored two touchdowns and ran for 193 yards in Whitehall’s 37-0 shutout of Allen. The junior quarterback scored on touchdown runs of 58 and 73 yards and threw a 53-ayrd touchdown to Damonte Freeman. Wentling completed eight of 18 passes for 84 yards and three interceptions.

With the win, the Zephyrs evened their record at 2-2. On the night, Whitehall rolled up 407 yards of total offense, 323 of those on the ground.

“At first, I was really frustrated,” said Wentling, who has completed 48 of 92 passes for 613 yards for the season. “We just couldn’t get things going.

“I felt we had openings. Coach (head coach Matt Senneca) told me to lock it up, and we did. Once that happened, we got everything together.”

Senneca had confidence Wentling could turn the tide.

“The benefit in having him is that if it’s not working one way, he can make it work another way,” said Senneca. “He gave us an added bonus in the run game, which helped, and it was able to be enough for us.”

Wentling sees a growing confidence with his team that went winless last season and won two games in 2018. The Zephyrs are in line for a District 11 Class 2A playoff spot.

“The two wins we have really made us feel good,” he said. “It gave us the confidence we needed. I feel really happy for the seniors who didn’t get a win last year.

“We’re beginning to realize what we can do. We just need to stay focused and keep this going.”

The Zephyrs travel to Emmaus Friday to meet the undefeated Green Hornets (3-0), who are coming off a 24-7 win over Allentown Central Catholic. Emmaus earlier beat Allen, 58-0.

“Emmaus will be a tough matchup for us,” said Senneca. “They have some great skill players in Brandon Camire and Jameel Sanders, and their quarterback is a good, young dual threat guy.

“Defensively, their linebackers fly to the ball, and they play physical. It’ll be a tough test on both sides of the ball for us, and we’re going to need to play 48 minutes to have a shot.”
