Northwestern golf team must replace last year’s top two players

With most of the top of last year’s line up graduated from Northwestern Lehigh’s golf team, there will be plenty of new faces on the links this year for the Tigers.

Last year’s top player graduated in Luke Hallman, along with teammates Gabby Smalley, Joe Frey and Jake Dellicker. Hallman will play college golf for his father, Billy Hallman, the head coach at Muhlenberg College.

Luke Hallman finished in the top five at last year’s Colonial League Championship. Smally, a four-year member of the varsity team, took second place in the league tournament’s girls division and went on to a fifth-place finish at districts.

Entering his 10th season with the program, Tiger head coach Tim Miller knows his team is very young with just three seniors on the roster.

Seniors Tyler Stasko and Ryan Kensinger lead a returning pack of Tigers this fall. Juniors Nathan Knerr, Ethan Bailey and Nick Scott are also part of the team.

Junior Ethan Lazzarus and sophomores Mary Frey and Morgan LaBuda are looking to contribute this season. Freshman Stone Sosnovik has caught his coach’s attention with his progression in preseason.

Miller is having as much fun on the links right now as his Tigers are, and he pointed out it is simply because they’re all a really good bunch of young adults to work with.

The team looks to build on last year’s 6-7 overall record a year ago. But, wins aren’t the only goal Miller wants his players to strive for. s

“I’m not emphasizing wins and losses,” Miller said. “I always tell the kids that your number one responsibility when you are playing, and you’re representing Northwestern Lehigh High School, people will remember you for what kind of person you were to play with, not the score you shot.

“This is more about kind of maturing as young ladies and gentlemen, and I’m more interested in them learning the game of golf, being good sportsmen about it and will take it one year, and we will take it one week at a time.”

While a lot of new faces at on this year’s team, a couple of veteran Tigers have been showing up at practice often. With Hallman and Frey (DeSales University) attending local colleges, they’ve had time to help Miller bring along the young players on this year’s Northwestern roster.

“Luke and Joe have kind of been hanging around practice a little bit, and even over the summer, lending support and advice to not only the new team members but the ones that were on the team last year,” Northwestern head coach Tim Miller said.
