’Canes fall to Hornets

Liberty senior Veronica Lynn won her match with Emmaus’s Jocelyn Chow, 7-5, 7-5, at number one singles in the Hurricanes’ 1-6 loss to the Hornets on Friday.

“I’m a power player, and it’s so difficult because she won’t miss,” Lynn said. “ [Coach Chris Conrad] said just keep the balls in, go side-to-side, run her around. I had to keep hitting but not as hard as I wanted to.”

Emmaus had a scheduled match against Dieruff on Friday, but the Huskies don’t have a team this year, so they picked up the match with Liberty.

“It’s so different,” said Lynn. “Normally we’d be traveling on the bus and going to play other, farther-away schools, but we’re only playing within our [county]. We’re not playing as many different teams, so we’re not playing as many different people.

“We weren’t sure we were going to have a season. I’m so grateful we can play, so I can’t really have any complaints.”

Liberty’s number three singles player Margeaux Donchez doesn’t mind this season’s schedule where teams play opponents twice consecutively.

“I actually think it’s better because during practice we can work on whatever Coach Conrad noticed we need to work on, so at the next match we’re ready,” she said.

Liberty’s Hermani Patel, who plays at third doubles with Elise Kney also sees positives in this season’s schedule.

“I think there’s an advantage to playing them right away because we know their strengths and weaknesses, so we can work on that and won’t forget about it,” Patel said.

Kney and Patel were exhibition partners last year, but now, as juniors, are seeing varsity playing time.

“The one girl’s serves today were really fast, and where they were hitting the ball made it a little bit hard,” said Kney. “Our communication on the court was really good today.”

This week, the Hurricanes will face Bethlehem Catholic on Tuesday at Liberty, past Press deadlines, and on Thursday at Becahi.
