Basket social offers wide variety of items at Werley’s Corners
A dizzying number of cellophane wrapped baskets lured friends and neighbors to browse, purchase a ticket and take a chance on winning the one of their choice at the Weisenberg/Lowhill Historical Society the last week of May.
“A lot of people like the home-oriented things,” Debbie Zvanut said. “Home goods are very important. But we also have a lot of baskets for kids, and we do like to have holiday baskets as well.”
The social featured “171 regulars and 38 specials,” according to Zvanut. “The specials are in the back and are priced higher. In the specials category, there are many handcrafted items.”
Zvanut touted a fused glass bird bath and a glass blown rabbit, adding “we also have cash.”
The cost for a chance on each basket fit every budget at $1 per ticket, $5 for six and $20 for 36.
The historical society has been holding basket socials for over 10 years.
“This is our 26th year,” said Gloria Zimmerman, president of the historical society. “Over that time, we’ve raised close to $170,000.”
The popular event is held twice a year, in the spring and fall.
“It’s our biggest fundraiser,” she said. “Our goal is to raise $10,000.”
The basket social is the result of weeks of planning.
“There are 26 members on our committee,” Zvanut said. “We’ve been wrapping baskets and tying ribbons for the last six Tuesdays.”
The popular event had a four-day run.
“It’s fun for [visitors],” said Beverly Kistler, who was selling tickets on the front porch. “The baskets are so tempting and so festive.”
“You get to meet with friends from the community. Everyone looks forward to it.”
