Sevrain to play at Messiah

Sydney Sevrain’s senior basketball season didn’t end well. After colliding with a Moravian Academy player in the Colonial League semifinals, Sevrain fell to the court and later limped off with an ankle injury that finished her season.

The Lady Tigers then lost to Central Catholic in the first round of districts to officially close Sevrain’s high school sports career.

The next time Sevrain plays basketball, it will be as a member of the Messiah University Falcons. The school changes from a college to a university designation on July 1 and Sevrain will be in the pre-dental program, majoring in biology.

Sevrain’s final decision came down to either Moravian or Messiah, but there was one key factor that tipped the scales for Messiah.

“For me, the faith aspect of Messiah was what convinced me to go there,” said Sevrain, who officially wrapped up her high school classes this week. “In addition to that, the education is great, and the distance and location are perfect.”

With older sister Gabby at Dickinson College, the two sisters will be close enough geographically to make it easier for their parents to get both girls home from school and also afford them the opportunity to see both play.

Dickinson and Messiah don’t play each other so the sisters won’t be seeing each other on the court as they would have had Sydney chosen Moravian.

Gabby and Sydney did play together on the Northwestern Lehigh team for two seasons and Sydney spent her senior season playing alongside younger sister, Paige in high school.

“It was great to get to play with them,” said Sevrain. “They both bring something different to the court.

“I’m looking forward to all of the new experiences in college and getting back on the court. The coaches haven’t told me yet what my role will be on the team or how much I’ll play at first but I’m excited about it.”

While Northwestern’s basketball season was completed prior to high school sports being shut down, Sevrain was robbed of one opportunity. Both she and teammate Mackenzie Hess were selected to play in the Via All-Star Classic for seniors, but the game was cancelled.

Sevrain is looking ahead to her time at Messiah but looks back fondly on her high school career.

With Paige going into her sophomore season, Sydney figures to get a lot of updates on the team and is planning on closely following Paige’s development after a big freshman season that saw her crack the starting lineup.

“It’s a great program and the coaches really make it great,” said Sydney Sevrain. “We had a lot of success and a lot of good times. I wish my senior season didn’t end the way that it did because I wanted to finish strong with the team. They have a good future.

“I think when I look back, the thing that I’ll remember most are the playoff games. Just the added excitement and energy in those games was great. I’ll definitely remember that feeling.”
