NASD names assistant principal for borough elementaries

A new assistant principal has been appointed for the borough elementary schools in Northampton Area School District.

Douglas Sherman, assistant principal at Chipperfield Elementary School, Stroudsburg Area School District, must give notice to his employer before starting in NASD.

The borough schools principal oversees the Siegfried building (grades 1-5), 1677 Lincoln Ave., and the Franklin building (kindergarten), 855 Lincoln Ave.

The school board voted 9-0 to hire Sherman at $80,000 annually, prorated with benefits.

“[Sherman] may start by the start of the fall term but possibly in September,” NASD Superintendent of Schools Joseph S. Kovalchik said after the July 16 NASD school board meeting.

Sherman, who previously taught in the Allentown School District, received a B.A. in elementary education from The Pennsylvania State University and a master’s of educational leadership and principal certification from California University of Pennsylvania.

Sherman, of Bethlehem, and his fiancee, Erin McLaughlin, an East Penn School District teacher, plan to marry in about three weeks.

“I’m excited to join the Northampton Area School District community and be a part of it,” Sherman said after the meeting.

In other business at the July 16 meeting, school directors approved an application to the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE) that could clear the way for the final series of reimbursement payments for Northampton Area Middle School.

The board voted 9-0 to approve PlanCon part J, “Project Accounting Based on Final Costs,” and give approval to submit PlanCon part J to PDE for approval of the NAMS project.

“It is the final PlanCon you file,” NASD Business Administrator Terry Leh explained. “This completes all the records we have going back to 2010 for the middle school. I’ve gone over this with the auditors. Once it’s approved, PDE will reimburse.”

NASD will receive annual payments from PDE based on a percentage of the amount of bonds issued 2012-16 for the middle school project.

“Until it’s submitted to the Public Department of Education and we get a final percentage, we won’t know the amount,” Leh said after the meeting.
