Baseball looking to turn things around
Over the past two weeks, Northampton’s baseball team has fallen victim to Murphy’s law.
For the Konkrete Kids, whatever can possibly can go wrong has for them. Monday’s 18-13 slugfest loss to Allentown Central Catholic marked their fifth consecutive defeat leaving them with a 5-8 overall record, having a number of games in which they led eventually flipped against them by a big one-run inning.
Also, the Kids recently had four players leave for a school conference, causing them to miss a few games.
“One inning has been such as huge difference maker for us,” said head coach Mick Sugra of his club’s fate. “We had some one-run losses earlier, but we had one (3-2 to Nazareth April 21 at Coca-Cola Park) in which the game should have ended in a strikeout and it resulted in a hit to tie the game.
“Then in extra innings, a ball that was clearly foul was called fair and it cost us the game. I have it on tape and the Nazareth coach told me afterward that it was clearly foul.”
In all, it has been a cavalcade falling against them in several ways.
“It is the perfect storm,” added Sugra. “Everything seems to be going wrong.”
Sugra also is optimistic that staff stalwarts Mike Ettl and Jared Hunsberger can shake the early doldrums that has plagued their performance.
“Ettl and Hunsberger can hit for 11 runs in three innings (11-9 loss to Stroudsburg),” said Sugra. “They have struggled and we rely on them. Sometimes, we go out there and expect to perform poorly.”
Sugra realizes the clock is ticking against his team to qualify for districts. With seven games left, the Kids are faced with the reality of winning at least four of them and assuredly five to gain a spot.
They began that trek with a game at Bethlehem Catholic Wednesday and then will travel to Whitehall Friday.
It was the first meeting against Becahi, and they earlier dropped an 8-1 decision to Whitehall, mainly due to a five-run, fourth-inning.
“We certainly have our work cut out for us,” stated Sugra. “It seems like we have seen everybody’s ace this year as well. We’ll see if we can go on a nice run down the stretch.”
