Tennis having solid season

The Northampton boys tennis team scored back-to-back wins last week with victories over William Allen and Wilson High School.

The team effort which included individual and doubles victories propelled the team to a stellar 6-3 record overall record for the season (5-3 for league play).

Head coach Kim Davis was ready for a tough week as he commented, “We’re just getting to the meat of our schedule and preparing to face three undefeated teams in the coming weeks.”

But if this week’s performance is any indication, the team is in for a great end to the season with district singles just around the corner.

Northampton defeated Allen on Thursday, April 12, by a score of 7-0. On Saturday the team faced Wilson in another home contest and claimed yet another victory by an overall score of 5-2.

Junior Andrew Hozza is enjoying a strong season so far. This is the third season for Hozza with the team. Always a strong competitor, Hozza seems to have particularly sharpened his skills this year. Hozza bested top players from Dieruff, Freedom and Easton earlier in the season. Adding to his wins for the season, Hozza left Allen’s Shadi Eldawayati with just two points in last Thursday’s contest at home. On Tuesday, it was more for the same from Hozza as he allowed just two points from Wilson’s Anthony DeArmas.

Also adding to the strong advantage this week, Chris Nemeth held Allen’s Manny Cruz to just one point in Thursday’s contest and Nemeth bested Wilson’s Jonathan Scott by scores of 6-4 and 6-2 in the two games of their match on Saturday.

Northampton’s double teams also continue to add to the strength of the squad with the duo of Dan Fox and Nick Hudak pulling out an overall win after three games against Wilson’s Glovas and Fischer. The Northampton duo also shut out Garcia and Shan from William Allen in last Thursday’s contest.

With just a few matches left and the promise of more outside practices to come, the boys are looking forward to continued success.

“We have a tight schedule with 4 or 5 matches a week,” said Davis, but the team is looking forward to continuing their strong season.

Northampton will face Bethlehem Catholic on Thursday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. and Parkland High School on Friday also beginning at 3:30 p.m.
