NHS baseball opens with win over NP
Like most teams, Northampton has its doubts about opening the season after having its outdoor practice time reduced to the series of uncharacteristic snow storms during March.
After their opening-game performance, their fears can be put to rest.
The Konkrete Kids had a solid, overall team effort in a five-inning, shortened 13-2 victory over North Pocono Monday afternoon.
Northampton pounded out 12 hits and received a strong opening start from senior Mike Ettl, who allowed just two hits, struck out four, and walked one over four innings. The Kids had an 11-run third inning and sealed the game two innings later.
Brittain Shander, Zech Lambert, Timmy Antigua, Andrew Kovalchik, and Issac Tucker each had two hits.
Shander drove in three runs, and Antigua and Kovalchik each plated a pair of runs. Issac Tucker smacked his first homer of the year and had two RBIs. The Kids had four extra base hits -- a pair of doubles, a triple, and a home run.
“Overall, I was very happy with our performance,” said head coach Mick Sugra. “We got production from nearly everybody. Getting the extra-base hits we did was a plus.
“North Pocono is no slouch. They are a very good fundamental team and were in the state playoffs two years ago. We had a good first game of the season.”
Sugra sees a three-man rotation of Ettl, Jared Hunsberger and Cole Rufe in the early going.
“Mike (Ettl) worked out of jam in the first inning and did a good job,” added Sugra. “We expect Ettl to have a good season and we have all the confidence in the world in Hunsberger and Rufe.
“We’ll see how that goes.”
Northampton traveled to East Stroudsburg South Wednesday. The Kids then will have a busy week ahead when they host Emmaus Monday, travel to Allentown Central Catholic Wednesday, host Dieruff Thursday, and travel to Parkland Saturday.
