Wrestlers have high hopes for districts
Winning district titles has been apart of Northampton’s wrestling legacy and the K-Kids will look to write another chapter when the District 11 3A tournament gets underway this weekend at Liberty’s Memorial Gymnasium.
The Kids will look to advance a contingent of wrestlers and try to match last year’s results, where they finished third in the team standings and medaled eight wrestlers (two champions).
“Our goal is to be district champions,” said head coach Seth Lisa about the team’s mindset heading into the tournament. “The guys feel great and have been improving all season long. Now is the time to swing for the fence and have fun.”
The Kids lineup this weekend will be led by Ryan Stilgenbauer (106); Sam Hanley (113); Logan Ninos (120); Jagger Condomitti (126); Devon Britton (132); Erik Schreck (138); Michael Kistler (145); Cole Kleppinger (152); Riley Gallagher (160); Noah Messer (170); Shaun Miller (182); Jayden Bortz (195); Eddie Confer (220) and Bubba Werkheiser (HWT).
Equaling last year’s performance will be tough, considering the Kids had four finalists and two champions, all of whom have graduated.
With returning medal winners Hanley (fourth), Ninos (sixth), Britton (fourth) and Kistler (fifth) back in the fray, Northampton should be well represented on the medal stand, but the question is how well can they do?
“We know how to wrestle through the positions we will be seeing and we know what our competition will be like,” said Lisa. “Everyone on this team believes they can qualify. If everyone wrestles with fight and heart, we can have a real fun weekend. It’s up to our guys at this point.”
Wrestling gets underway at 4 p.m. on Friday for the pigtail round and quarterfinals are set for 6 p.m.
Saturday sees the semifinal round start at 10:30 a.m. Finals will take place in conjunction with 2A at 5:45 p.m.
