Swim teams return strong senior class
The Parkland swim teams will get the 2017-18 season underway this weekend as they co-host the annual Cedar Crest Classic along with Emmaus.
The Trojans should have plenty of talent back from last year’s team.
The Parkland boys team went 11-1 overall last year and 10-1 in the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference. The boys graduate several key scorers from last year in divers Chris Lehman and Jonathan Hansell, along with swimmers Bar Maymon, Hyunbin Kim, Charls Villano and Mathew Engler, who was a district champ and state qualifier last season.
The boys will have a senior-laden team led by two returning state qualifiers in seniors Matthew Ceh and James Connolly. Ceh made it to states in both the 50- and 100-yard freestyle event last year, taking second and fourth place, respectively, in those events at districts. he also was part of relay teams that placed third and fourth at districts. Connolly is a returning district champ and state qualifier in the breaststroke.
Senior Adam Kucharzuk also returns this season. He finished seventh at districts last year in the 100 freestyle and was part of last year’s 200 and 400 freestyle relay teams, which placed fourth and third, respectively, at districts.
The Trojan girls team also finished 11-1 overall and 10-1 in the EPC last year.
While the Lady Trojans graduated three key members of their team, they also return several seniors who are coming off successful junior years, as well as some young talent on the diving boards.
Senior Zoe Sheridan returns to defender her district title in the 500 freestyle and try to earn a return trip to states. She also took second place in the 200 freestyle at districts last season and swam both events at states. In district relay events last season, Sheridan helped the Trojans to a fourth-place finish in 200 freestyle relay and third place in the 400 free relay.
Four other seniors who were part of a district runner-up medley relay team as juniors also return in Abigail Sheridan, Megan Sicinski, Courtney Sicinski and Grace Kennedy.
Megan Sicinski also earned district medals in breaststroke (second place) and 500 freestyle (fourth place), qualifying for states in the breaststroke. Courtney Sicinski finished third in both individual medley and breaststroke at districts.
Abigail Sheridan placed fifth in butterfly at districts last year and sixth in back stroke. She was also part of the 400 freestyle relay that got third place, along with Courtney Sicinski, Zoe Sheridan and graduate Nicole Nesland.
Kennedy was part of the Trojans’ fourth place 200 freestyle relay, along with Megan Sicinski, Nesland and Zoe Sheridan. Individually, Kennedy was a district runner-up in backstroke and placed sixth in the 50-yard freestyle.
Returning divers Lexi Lehman and Alexa Brinker (sophomore) took first and second place last year at districts and went on to states.
After Saturday’s invitational, Parkland will open the regular season Tuesday when it hosts Pocono Mountain West.
