Aja Blount cements her name among Northampton greats
A one-point loss in the state quarterfinals didn’t seem like a fitting, or fair, way for Northampton senior Aja Blount to end her career as a Konkrete Kid.
A 56-55 loss to Boyertown last Saturday ended the Kids impressive and perhaps unexpected run in states. In that game it was, perhaps, fitting Blount scored 28 points and added 12 rebounds in what turned out to be her curtain call wearing the orange and black.
Blount officially finished her career with 1,767 points, which puts her second on Northampton’s all-time scoring list, behind only Laura Newhard and her 2,143 points.
“I am leaving the high school as the second all-time leading scorer and I’m very happy about it because I worked so hard,” Blount said. “There has been very talented basketball players to play at Northampton and I’m excited and proud that I can be up there as one of them. Now that the season is over it has finally sunk in that all of my hard work was worth it and I’m finally up there with all of the great basketball players to attend Northampton.”
While Blount has had some time to reflect back, she still wishes she had a few more games to suit up.
“It was very hard for me, and upsetting, that my high school career has come to an end,” Blount said. “I still can’t believe it.”
Blount was a first teamer as well as the East Penn Conference Most Valuable Player this season.
She also finished her career with over 1,000 rebounds, something that left a mark with her coach.
“I’d have to rank her as one of the top-two players along with Laura Newhard to ever play at Northampton,” head coach Jeff Jacksits said. “She was the most tenacious rebounder that I have ever coached, boy or girl.
“I think what makes her unique, beside her strength and tenacity, are her hands. She seems to always grab rebounds or catch passes that others would miss. Her leadership and overall play will truly be missed.”
While Blount’s hoop career is now over, she still has some business to take care of this spring. Blount will jump right into the track season - once all the snow is gone - and will be a key member of the throwers. She said while her and some other girls on the basketball team are about two weeks behind, she’s anxious to get going.
“I’ll be working on getting back into the swing of things for throwing,” Blount said. “I am excited to see what this track season has in store for me. This season I have my goals set on placing first at leagues and districts and also qualifying for states again and placing even higher. I’m just going to keep trying to break my personal bests and finish my senior season better than I finished last year.”
