LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Boys hope for D-11 berth

Opportunities.

It is a word that can easily summarize the Northampton boys’ basketball season this winter.

The Konkrete Kids have taken advantage of some opportunities, while they also have failed to reap some benefits.

The Kids face their biggest opportunity of the season when they traveled to Parkland Wednesday night, a game that happens after Press deadlines. With a win and a Easton loss (to Freedom), the Kids (9-12) would then have to rely on the District 11 power rankings to gain the eighth and final spot in the Class 6A district playoff bracket. A loss would greatly diminish their chances.

Northampton did end its regular season at home on a high note when they recorded a 62-59 win over Pocono Mountain East on their senior night Monday. Senior Morgan Heffelfinger, Jahmari Austin, and Joe Tocci – who all have started this season – were joined by fellow seniors Dylan Baird and Nick Miller in the starting lineup in traditional fashion.

“Morgan, Jahmari, and Joe have done a solid job for us all year,” said head coach Coy Stampone. “But I can’t say enough about how much Dylan Baird and Nick Miller have done for us.

“All of these guys have been with me since middle school. They all have grown up on and off the court.”

Stampone didn’t see his team reaching its peak, but he believes they had their share of accomplishments and opportunities.

“We did have some very good games,” said Stampone. “But I don’t think of it as coming all together for us. We had some really good situations against Central Catholic and we had back-to-back wins against Blue Mountain and Liberty.

“We had our best all-around game against Liberty (a 56-45 win) in which we played all four quarters and hit all our metrics. We had a missed opportunity against Nazareth (a 71-60 loss). They (Nazareth)) came out and put together a pretty good game.

“We also had a good game against Emmaus (a 46-36 loss) in which we were able to play with our tempo, but we ran into trouble in the third quarter.”

Yet, Stampone sought a sense of consistency for his team throughout the season.

“We battled inconsistency all season and we did miss some opportunities,” he added. “We had an up and down season, but we also did have our share of bright spots. At times, we played some very good basketball and we hope it will pay off for us.”
