LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Big week for boys

For the Northampton boys basketball, their season basically comes down to this week.

The Konkrete Kids will begin their final two-week, seven-game trek to a postseason berth, needing a solid week’s performance plus some help from other teams.

They began with an overall 6-9 mark and technically need five wins in their last seven contests to officially gain a district berth. However, the Kids could still qualify with a below .500 mark as one of the top eight teams in the District 11 Class 6A bracket. They were the ninth place team in the bracket this week and still have the possibility to gain a spot.

The Kids, though, will need to respond with a solid effort after halftime, a trend that has affected them lately. They finished the previous week with an impressive 19-point win over Callentwon Central Catholic, but they then suffered tight defeats against Whitehall and Bethlehem Catholic.

“We really have to take care of our own business,” said head coach Coy Stampone. “We had three good games last week, but we fell asleep in third quarter. We have had trouble coming out strong to start the second half.

“We have been playing well defensively lately, holding teams to around 60 points. But we are in a league where a couple of turnovers or a bad spell for a few minutes can really hurt us.”

The Kids began their push this week with a rematch at Whitehall Tuesday, a home game with Blue Mountain Thursday and a game at Liberty Friday.

“We know what we can expect with Whitehall and Blue Mountain has more than 10 wins and is a very good team,” added Stampone. “Liberty will a tough one as well.

“It’s crazy. I think we are playing well right now, and we have a great opportunity to come out of these games on a positive note.”

Stampone has been pleased with the recent and steady contributions of senior Morgan Heffelfinger and junior Aidan Elwood. He also cited the recent play of junior Mike Torres and senior Jamari Austin.

“Mike (Torres) has been starting for us lately and he is playing hard,” said Stampone. “He has picked up his game. Jamari (Austin) has developed into a steady number three scorer for us.”

Stampone understands his team’s future can arrive quickly. Regardless of the varsity team’s outcome, the Kids’ freshman team began the week with one loss and had three freshmen playing on the JV team.

The Kids missed districts last season by one game.

“Until we lose three more games, we still have something to play for,” stated Stampone. “One of our main goals was to be playing meaningful games at the end of the season. Now it is time for everyone to step up their game.

“We have to be able to finish games in the next two weeks.”
