Lehigh Township: Rails to Trails group schedules meeting

If you are heading out for a brisk walk or bike ride, look for the informative signs the Lehigh Township Rails to Trails group has installed along Delaware and Lehigh Rail Trail. They can be found along the trail between Slatington and Cove Road Trailhead. One has been placed by the refurbished concrete phone booth and the other is nearby, by the remains of the three-mile dam. Both signs use photos and text to explain some local history relating to the railroads and canal that had run along the river.

You can learn about the use of the phone booths. Have you ever seen any other booths along former railroad beds?

The three-mile dam, like many others that once spanned the Lehigh River, had more than one purpose. Do you know what they were?

The Rails to Trails group always is looking for people who enjoy the outdoors to join its group and participate in activities. The next meeting will be 7 p.m. Jan. 19 at the Lehigh Township Municipal Building, 1069 Municipal Road, Walnutport.

For additional information, visit the group’s Facebook page or call 610-767-0676.
