Grapplers blend youth, experience
Parkland wrestling coach Ryan Nunamaker will look down his lineup card and see a good amount of youth this season.
The 13th-year head coach will also have plenty of experience to mix in that will bring the type of leadership needed to compete in a strong Eastern Pennsylvania Conference, and District 11 field that includes state powers Bethlehem Catholic and Northampton, along with Nazareth.
“We have a solid core of talented and experienced wrestlers that will provide great leadership for our underclassmen this season,” Nunamaker said. “Many of them have competed at the state tournament with the team or as an individual in their high school career. We are also excited with the potential of our underclassmen, who we will continue to develop throughout the season. If we can stay healthy and get everyone at the correct weight, we should be able to compete with almost any team in the state.”
The Trojans, who finished last season with a 15-5 overall team record, will be anchored by returning seniors Frank Guida (182 pounds) and Nathan Feyrer (220).
Guida, who is committed to wrestle at Bucknell University, finished second in the district tournament last year. Feyrer was fourth in the region and qualified for the state tournament.
Four other upperclassmen return to give Nunamaker and Parkland valuable experience. Juniors Zach Ortman (138 pounds), Blake Shalbert (132), Adam Lizak (170) and Nick Dolak (126) were all part of Parkland’s line up a year ago. Ortman finished 6th at districts, and Dolak was 4th in regionals.
Sophomore Brandon Kassis (120 pounds) finished the regular season 28-3 last year, but was injured and missed the postseason.
Two freshmen that Nunamaker is excited about are Joseph Dolak (106 pounds) and David Polanki (160).
The Trojans open up the season Wednesday against Dieruff.
“Our kids are excited about the opportunities that lie ahead and understand the many challenges in our schedule,” said Nunamaker. “We will be attending two of the toughest tournaments in the country, competing at the PowerAde Tournament in Pittsburgh and the Escape the Rock Tournament at Council Rock South High School. Three of the top five teams in the state are in our conference this season, so qualifying for the state tournament will be very difficult. Our kids are determined to be one of the top teams in the state by the end of the season. We feel our schedule will help prepare our wrestlers for the best possible outcome.”
