School board OKs salaries

Salaries for the administrators who oversee Parkland staff, students and facilties were approved by the school board at its June 23 meeting.

In the 2015-16 school year, District Superintendent Richard Sniscak will be paid $168,884; Assistant Superintendent Rod Troutman $150,515; and Director of Business Administration John Vignone will receive $149,678.

Other administrators' salaries include $133,562 for the assistant to superintendent for operations; $127,073 for the high school principal; $118,108 for the superintendent of elementary curriculum and instruction; $117,670 for the director of school services; $117,000 for the director of student services; $75,300 for the transportation coordinator; and $64,000 for the garage foreman.

The list of 59 administrators includes principals, psychologists, coordinators, supervisors and directors of various programs.

In other business, the board approved non-medical insurance premiums for the next school term.

Workers' Compensation premium comes in at $726,954; property, casualty and automobile insurance at $430,761; excess liability insurance $45,182; school board legal liability $32,000; cyber liability $21,290; and boiler and machinery $18,675.

School board directors approved the 0.1 mill library tax, which amounts to $22.21 on a $222,050 property, the median assessed value of a home in the Parkland School District.

The board also adopted a Homestead/Farmstead exclusion resolution granting $107.61 tax relief on approved properties using state gaming money; and updates on the high school tennis courts at a cost of $45,770.

Rob Cohen, school board representative to the Parkland Community Library, reported the library's Vision statement is "To Connect, To Discover and To Grow."

He said the library's mission is to serve as a cornerstone of community resources and to meet the educational and entertainment needs of a diverse community.

The board offered accolades and a standing ovation to Rob Thornburg, who is retiring after a long career at Parkland as director of student services.

Board President Roberta Marcus said Thornburg had a fine perception of what is best for kids.

"Thousands of children are better for having you here," Marcus said.
