An overnight break-in June 24 at Coplay's Parkway Pool rocked borough officials, who said it was the first major occurrence in memory since the pool's opening in the 1970s.
Patrol Officer William Globosits discovered the heavy steel doors at the pool's entrance ajar at 3:45 a.m. and immediately informed Councilman Steve Burker, recreation committee chairman, and Council President Lou Bodish.
Although the double doors were damaged, an undetermined amount of money was stolen and other property at the pool was vandalized, Burker said the pool didn't miss a beat. He credited public works Supervisor Paul Boyle and his crew with making temporary repairs so the pool could open as scheduled later in the day to the public, including two groups from day care centers whose children spend afternoons there.
Police Chief Vince Genovese said the department initiated an immediate investigation into the break-in and burglary of the pool.
The owners of The Bacon Strip, who operate the concession stand, were also notified. A variety of snack foods were stolen.
The damage, described as "extensive," was quickly restored, said Burker, again crediting Boyle and his personnel for their work.
