Jaindl Land Co. to improve road near Fogelsville Elementary
Situated along Route 100, the Fogelsville Elementary School is an island surrounded by heavily traveled roads and large commercial properties.
At the June 16 school board meeting, engineer Bruce Anderson of the Pidcock Company, described a conceptual design to enhance roadways at the school and adjacent businesses on behalf of his client, Jaindl Land Company.
"We have a plan for access management at no cost to the school district," Anderson said.
He provided background on the Lehigh Valley West II Industrial Park, which nearly surrounds the school.
"This development started in the 1990s and is coming full out now," Anderson explained.
He said a four-story hotel is proposed for the parcel on the north side of the school and a 60,000-square-foot office building is planned for the lot beyond the hotel.
"There are five driveways on Route 100 between Schantz Road and Industrial Boulevard," Anderson told the board. "We want to reduce the number of driveways."
He proposes a new driveway for multiple users on the south side of the school and elimination of a driveway planned earlier off Route 100, closer to Industrial Drive.
Other planned changes include turning lanes, relocation of the flashing school warning sign, curvature on the road to reduce speeds, and signage to direct drivers to the school or to various establishments along the way.
Board members wanted to be assured non-school traffic would not enter the premises.
Anderson said directional signs will take care of that issue.
Another concern was the boundary between the school and the hotel.
"We will have a fence barrier on the property line and plants on the hotel side to screen the school," Anderson said. "Our next step is to go to the township. We're hoping for your support."
He said construction of the new road will begin no earlier than 2016, although hotel development is already in process.
Board President Roberta Marcus offered comments.
"Jaindl Land Company is a good neighbor," Marcus said. "The board is in alliance to move forward."
Rob Cohen expressed appreciation all of the road improvements will be done at no cost to Parkland.
"I appreciate the willingness to work together on a team with this," Cohen said.
