Chief Stewart updates board

Neffs Fire Company Chief Jim Stewart, also president of the North Whitehall Emergency Services Organization, gave North Whitehall supervisors an update of the organization's services.

The group has purchased a Utility Task Vehicle, known as a UTV, for firefighting and rescue operations in remote areas in the township.

The vehicle, on a trailer, is housed at the Schnecksville Fire Company.

Total cost for this piece of equipment was $48,000.

Stewart told the board reflective address sign sales are making progress. They are sold to the public at slightly over cost.

Residents needing reflective house number signs should contact their local fire departments.

In other matters, supervisors voted to exonerate a property at 2383 Levans Road from paying the $37 street light tax for 2014.

Township Manager Jeff Bartlett reported a request for payment had been received from Livengood Excavating for work on the Ironton Rails Trails project.

The board agreed to release $33,478.11 after the engineer inspects the site to concur the work was performed.

The total contract is for $528,000.

Bartlett advised the board a Greenways Heritage Grant was approved for the amount of $12,500.

This matching grant will be used for construction of the trail head on the township property along Levans Road.

Sports camps are now open and accepting participants.

Camps include: boys and girls basketball, boys lacrosse, cheerleading, football, girls field hockey, girls softball, boys baseball and creative theater arts. Programs are open for children age 5 to 12.

The township zoning hearing board will hear another appeal 7:30 p.m. June 17 on the proposed placement of a heliport in the northwestern part of the township.

Mark Hills told supervisors there were no crossing signs on Quarry Street where the IRT crosses the road.

Bartlett will look into the matter.

Field Coordinator for the Parkland Area Soccer Club John Penrod approached the board about the condition of some of the sports fields.

In his opinion, some fields were unusable.

Penrod requested the fields be mowed Thursdays and Fridays so they are ready for weekend usage, as 90 percent of the games are on weekends.

Some fields will have goal areas rearranged to make them more useable.

He wants to redo some of the fields in the fall with reseeding, aeration and fertilization.

Joe Lampi voiced a complaint concerning a nearby property apparently containing large amounts of junk.

Bartlett told him letters were sent but the property owner did not respond.

The matter will be sent to the district judge for resolution.

Township Secretary Brenda Norder said township offices would be closed July 3 for the Independence Day holiday weekend.
