Girls team having historic season
Northampton's girls lacrosse team is hoping to make history this season with a potential playoff push, but that doesn't mean the K-Kids haven't made their own mark already this spring.
The Kids sit at 4-7 overall and 3-4 in East Penn Conference play after Tuesday's 18-7 defeat to Nazareth. The Kids also take onEmmaus (6-4, 5-1) and Freedom (4-6, 1-5) this week.
It'll be another week of tests for the program in its second year of varsity action, but head coach Paige Warbrick understands that taking one step at a time is essential for the growing program.
"The first conference win was huge for us and the first step in establishing our team and program as a future contender in the EPC," said Warbrick of the team's win over Central Catholic two weeks ago. "We're excited to keep performing and continuing to build our fundamentals and confidence in the game. They are a committed group who love the game and their excitement not only to win but to play is contagious. I couldn't be more proud of them."
Northampton has won three out of their last six games, including second and third conference victories over Freedom and Liberty, as the Kids swept their Bethlehem counterparts with 9-6 and 16-7 scores respectively.
Still, last Thursday's 20-3 defeat to Easton (7-2, 5-1) shows the work that still needs to be done for the program to be competitive in the future with some of the more established programs in the area.
Moving forward, Warbrick wants her team to finish strong as they head into the final stretch of the season with seven matches on the calendar.
"Consistency in play and a continued enthusiasm to move forward are our goals," she said. "We would also hope to bring home repeat wins for our second time playing the teams we have beat thus far (Central, Quakertown, Freedom) to finish 7-9.
"Being a new program in our second full varsity year, I think the next few years will be historic, including this one. We have a lot to prove and are excited to do so. The talent we are seeing is unbelievable for a young program such as ours and reflects a movement toward lacrosse becoming permanently established in the Northampton community. We couldn't be more thrilled to be a part of it."
On the boys side, the K-Kids (0-10, 0-7) have struggled this season. The closest they have come to being competitive in a contest was last week's 7-3 defeat to a previously winless Bethlehem Catholic side.
With games against Easton (10-1, 6-0) and Saucon Valley this week, the Kids will find themselves in tough predicaments again.
