Board awaits DCNR comment on Ironton Rail Trail project

North Whitehall Secretary Brenda Norder noted at the opening of the regular supervisors' meeting the township office would be closed April 3 for Good Friday.

She also reminded everyone tires will not be accepted for recycling before April 1.

In other matters, the Timm and Nancy Stoudt subdivision was before the board again for a time extension.

Supervisors agreed to give a 180-day extension to complete the subdivision.

The board voted to return the 2014 township property taxes to a resident under the Disabled Veterans Property Tax Exemption.

Under this statute, a veteran may apply for a tax rebate from the municipality where he or she resides.

Awarding the bid to continue the Ironton Rail Trail project was next on the agenda.

However, Township Manager Jeff Bartlett notified the board the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources has not commented on the bids.

This department must review the bids to determine if they meet guidelines for bidding on this project.

The low bid so far was placed by Livengood Excavation for $528,000.

Bartlett requested supervisors to table the matter until the April meeting.

The board agreed to this request.

The trail would be developed from the intersection of Quarry and Portland streets, along Quarry Road, across Mauch Chunk Road and end up at the township lot.

A request was placed before the board which would have township sponsorship for a DCNR mini grant, called the Lehigh Valley Greenway Conservation Landscape Mini Grant.

The request is for $25,000, of which the township would be responsible for $12,500.

The application must be submitted by March 24 with the award being made sometime in May.

Ray Deutsch of the Rail Trail Committee said the grant would finance trail extension from the trail terminus on the township lot to Levans Road.

The complete circuit would be approximately 12 miles when completed.

The board was in favor of applying for the grant.

Bartlett said the township received a letter from the county conservation district concerning the memorandum of understanding on conservation district reviews.

Bartlett's opinion was there were some portions in the letter not township friendly.

He asked the issue be discussed further at the next board meeting.
