At the Feb. 24 Parkland School Board meeting, Assistant Superintendent Dr. Rod Troutman explained how the five weather-related school closing days used so far were built into the 2014-15 calendar.
Speaking to The Press, Troutman said the first two lost days were made up as teacher development days.
The third day was re-scheduled for students to attend school Feb. 13, which had been part of their Presidents' Weekend Holiday.
Students will attend school April 2, the fourth snow day. This day had been included in spring vacation.
The fifth missed day will be made up by teachers, not students, for professional development.
One make-up day, March 13, remains in the schedule. If that date is used, any additional weather cancellations will have to be made up starting June 15, after the previously scheduled last day of school.
The board granted approval to five official local school district holidays for next year.
These are: the Friday after Thanksgiving, Dec. 24 and 31, the Friday of spring vacation, and on May 30.
Troutman said these days are "untouchable" and not available for school make-up days.
The board approved the calendar for the next school year.
Students will begin the term on Sept. 8, 2015, and will finish the year on June 16, 2016.
The Thanksgiving holiday will include Nov. 30.
Teachers will have 190 days; students have 183 days.
Once again provision has been made for six instructional days to be made up within the school term.
If more are required, additional days would be added starting the Monday of the following week.
