Whitehall Township Board of Commissioners on Monday were set to vote on the installation of LED lights sought by St. John's United Church of Christ on Grape Street, but held off so PennDOT can weigh in on the matter.
Township Engineer Frank Clark said he presented PennDOT with the township's request, which is now under review by the PennDOT district office in Allentown.
The commissioners expect no opposition from PennDOT. It is likely the board will vote on the issue at the February meeting.
The proposal calls for triangle lit LED signs to be erected on Grape Street to warn motorists of pedestrians crossing. Grape Street is a state road.
There now are white painted stripes on Grape Street and movable signs on the road.
The church's parking lot is on the south side. Visitors and those attending church have to cross the busy street to reach the church, its day care school and social hall.
At the Jan. 5 workshop, a delegation from St. John's was present. The commissioners were told the church and its facilities are busy year round with various activities that increase pedestrian and vehicle traffic.
The township administration and commissioners support the installation of LED lights.
The cost for the project ranges between $3,000 and $4,000. If voted on by the commissioners in February, the signs could be installed by the spring.
Although there have been no reports of serious incidents on Grape Street, individuals in the area are still in favor of the signs.
