Whitehall Township officials approve 2015 budget with no tax increase

Whitehall Township Board of Commissioners on Monday adopted the 2015 budget amounting to $20.8 million.

The $20.8 million spending plan retains the 2.80 real estate millage rate and does not raise taxes.

Board President Linda Snyder, Commissioners Gerard Palagonia and Clair Hunsberger voted in opposition.

Voting in support of the budget were Commissioners Phillips Armstrong, Philip Ginder, Dennis Hower and Thomas Slonaker.

No one offered a comment on their vote.

It is possible votes were related to the refuse collection contract awarded to Waste Management. The previous contact had been awarded to J.P. Mascaro & Sons.

J.P. Mascaro representatives indicated residents would see no savings in 2015.

Under the Waste Management pact, the savings would come in the third year since toter/carts would be bought for residential use.

There is no increase expected in garbage collection costs in 2015.

Mayor Edward D. Hozza Jr. in his budget message said the 2015 spending plan continues the township's investment in technology upgrades, heavy equipment replacement, infrastructure improvements and street reconstruction, park repairs and storm water systems.

The big ticket item includes $450,000 for a new fire truck at the West Catasauqua Fire Station.

Real estate taxes are anticipated to generate $6.1 million, followed closely by $5.9 million in earned income taxes and $550,000 in Local Services Taxes along with $465,000 in real estate transfer taxes.
