Hozza not happy with outside truck traffic

Whitehall Township Mayor Edward D. Hozza Jr. informed the board of commissioners at the Oct. 28 budget hearing talks that triaxle trucks are dumping fill at a former cement quarry in the Stiles-North Coplay area.

Hozza reported Oct. 29 as many as 20 fill-laden triaxle trucks have been observed on MacArthur Road. The trucks, he said, turned onto Chestnut Street and then made a left turn onto the Coplay Aggregates property.

Township officials thought the out-of-state trucks were taking the fill to former slate quarries in the Pen Argyl, Bangor and Plainfield Township regions. Such transit has caused the ire of Slate Belt residents and officials.

"The fill is silt, dredged from the Newark and Holland Bays," Hozza said.

The dredge is shipped to ports in the New York and New Jersey area, Hozza said.

Whitehall has expressed concern with the increase of triaxle trucks entering the township and the Coplay Aggregates site.

Previously, some of the fill was coming from the Hurricane Sandy cleanup site.

Township police and the weight team have consistently monitored commercial truck traffic in the township, including those traveling to the quarry.

Trucks and their drivers have been inspected. Some drivers have been cited for truck weight sanctions and faulty brakes, and have had their trucks placed out of commission or were cited for other violations.
