Connor McCloud becomes Eagle Scout

Connor M. McCloud achieved the rank of Eagle Scout Oct. 19.

The Eagle Scout Court of Honor ceremony was held at St. John's United Church of Christ Mickleys, Whitehall.

McCloud graduated from Whitehall High School in 2014 and is currently enrolled in an honors program at Lehigh Carbon Community College.

He earned 34 merit badges during his Scouting career which began when he was 6 years old. He is a member of Troop 79, sponsored by St. John Roman Catholic Church, Stiles.

McCloud held several troop positions over the years including den chief, quartermaster, troop guide and assistant senior patrol leader.

To earn the Eagle pin, McCloud and members of his troop cleaned and remodeled the basement of St. John's United Church of Christ Mickleys. Helping him were other Scouts from Troop 79.

"We started by cleaning the basement, put new light fixtures in, and painted the walls," McCloud said. "Many of the items in the basement were sold at a yard sale and bake sale. We earned $350, which we used to purchase spackling, paint and lights."

At the ceremony, McCloud presented the Eagle pins to his mother, Robin McCloud, and his father, Mike McCloud.

Scoutmaster Al Edelman presented McCloud with a certificate of outstanding achievement as an Eagle Scout from U.S. Sen. Pat Toomey.

Several people, including Edelman, Assistant Scoutmaster Amy Yanoshik, spoke during the ceremony, sharing memories of McCloud during his Scouting career.

Dave Sodl, Sr., troop committee chairman delivered the Voice of the Eagle; Amy Yanoshik, assistant scout master, Trail to Eagle; Sean Bankos, Eagle Scout, Troop 79, Eagle Challenge; Frank Tauber, troop charter representative, Eagle Charge; Chris Berner, committee member, Eagle Scout Promise; and the Rev. William Falla gave the invocation.

In addition to Scouting, McCloud was involved in the Whitehall Zephyr Marching Band, the concert band and chorus. He served as marching band drum major in 2014.
