The Great South Side Sale June 7 exceeded last year's $16,000 in sales by raising the largest amount ever to benefit after-school homework clubs for local children, according to a Lehigh University media release. Thousands of bargain hunters from all over the Lehigh Valley attend the annual event which dates back to 1996 as an outlet for donated items from Lehigh students and others. Mostly secondhand clothing, linens, office supplies, appliances, furniture, toys, games, athletic gear and odds and ends make up the reasonably priced inventory for the one-day sale. The fundraiser is coordinated by the LU Community Service Office to support children's educational programs which include homework clubs at Broughal, Fountain Hill and Donegan elementary schools. The huge sales tent has been at its present location for about 12 years, a city parking lot along East Fourth Street across from St. John's Windish Lutheran Church in South Bethlehem. Some 150 volunteers from LU and the community help make the annual event a success.
