Coplay Borough is replacing Dan Pavelko as its public works director.
Following an executive session lasting about 15 minutes Tuesday night, council reconvened and voted unanimously to advertise for a new public works director.
"Danny will be stepping down," said council President Lou Bodish following the vote.
Pavelko will remain with the borough. However he will become a union employee by joining the crew he supervised.
Rick Bundra retired from the public works crew in June. Moving Pavelko to the crew would round out the roster of five. The borough needs only a new foreman, Bodish said.
Bodish confirmed the move represents a pay cut for Pavelko but he did not know the salary figures. Documents obtained from the borough by The Press in 2013 list Pavelko's salary as $50,490. Public works crew members earned between $32,100 and $38,820 in 2013.
"It was the decision of council, talking with Danny," Bodish said after the meeting. Council members spoke with Pavelko for two hours Aug. 6. Bodish said Pavelko did not leave that meeting angry.
Bodish said he believes Pavelko has worked for the borough about 27 years. He did not know how long he had been supervisor.
Pavelko will continue to serve as public works director until a replacement is hired, Bodish said.
Pavelko could not be reached for comment.
